April weather brings a definite turn into warm weather avenue, with later days getting almost hot enough for shorts and a shirt! Depending on where we stand around the Flatiron District, it can feel a little chillier than it actually is.

Is the New York City Weather in April Rainy?
New York City weather in April is a month of complete spring magic, which means rain brings our nature back to life. The Flatiron district tends to follow other districts with rainy weather evenly spread throughout the month.
Because spring is well underway, the weather can be easily predicted. I recommend getting one of those small umbrellas to keep in your bag or a windbreaker to throw on in case of rain while you’re out.
How Much Does It Rain in April?
New York City has an average of 3 to 4 inches (75–100 mm) of rain in April, usually somewhere around 3.8 inches, which thankfully no longer includes snow. The weather is stable, so the 12 days of wet weather are generally predicted way in advance.
But you know that almost nothing makes this city stop, especially not a little rain. You can have a perfect day without ever leaving the Flatiron District. From a morning at the museum to great Italian food at Eataly and browsing traditional bookstores.
Best Things to Do in New York City When it Rains
New York City weather in April can be rainy, but a rainy day doesn’t have to be boring! If you don’t feel like braving the whole city, here are some things you can do in the Flatiron District armed with only an umbrella.
- 🖼️ Visit a Museum: One of the most attractive things about NYC’s cultural scene is how many places we can choose from! Flatiron District has the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) for more family-friendly fun and the Museum of Sex for grown-up, tongue-in-cheek fun.
- ☕ Grab a Coffee at Devoción or Birch Coffee: A rainy day can also be perfect for you to feel like a local at one of the many cafés in town. Flatiron people usually recommend Devoción, a unique spot with great roasts, and Birch Coffee, famous for its ingredient combinations in coffee drinks.
- 🍽️ Eataly Flatiron: While Eataly has several locations throughout New York City, most people agree that Flatiron District has the best one! You can browse stalls, get specialty ingredients, or sit down for a delicious meal looking over the city.
- 🛍️ ABC Carpet & Home: If you want to feel like a proper local, the best way to do it is to head to ABC Carpet and Home. You can get an inside look at how New Yorkers decorate their homes, get inspiration for our own, and people watch to our hearts’ content.
- 📚 Rizzoli Bookstore: I have lived here for so long, but going to Rizzoli Bookstore on a rainy day never gets old. You can get lost between the shelves full of books, art, travel inspo, and more. I never leave with my hands empty.
Although the Flatiron District is my favorite place in town, you could easily go beyond it for a day of rainy exploring other great indoor places. The MoMA and Met museums are great to spend a morning at, and Broadway shows happen throughout the day to keep you entertained.
Is it Hot in New York City in April?
It starts to get there! Early April is considerably cooler than the later days, but we can feel the temperatures rising, gearing up for late spring days.
How Cloudy is New York City Weather in April?
April in NYC sees the weather get increasingly sunnier as we get closer to summer. That doesn’t mean we get sunshine all the time, with about half of the days being overcast or straight up cloudy. Take advantage of this by doing your exploring on foot, because you will want to take the subway everywhere when the sun gets truly here!
How Humid is it in New York City in April?
Humidity in April begins to reach towards summer levels, but it is still pretty comfortable, with zero chances of a muggy day. However, relative humidity tends to hang around a comfy 76%. For a quick pick-me-up in case your skin gets dry, local shops like Credo Beauty and The Detox Market in Flatiron have great skin care options!
How Windy is it in New York City in April?
New York City weather in April isn’t so windy, even if the sensation can vary depending on where we are in town. The average speed of winds stays somewhere around 14.5 mph (23.4 kph). Because temperatures are rising, it isn’t so cold, but still carry a light sweater just in case!
When are Sunrise and Sunset in New York City in April?
Predicting the time the sun will come around or leave can be quite tricky, but we can expect:
- Sunrise: 5:15–5:45 AM
- Sunset: 7:45–8:15 PM
We can feel the days getting longer, meaning we can fit more into them. Why not finish a whole day of exploring in style by getting dinner at a rooftop restaurant like Serra by Birreria or close to the Flatiron Building?
Is the Water Warm in New York City in April?
Spring is well underway, but the water is still pretty chilly by most standards. There are those people who enjoy ‘artic dipping’, going for a splash in these cold waters, but I am not one of them! I recommend getting a good spot along the Hudson River Esplanade or maybe getting a spa treatment at a place like QC NY—not too far away and much more comfortable.
How Warm is the Water in New York City in April?
As we get closer to summer, temperatures will rise steadily. New York City weather in April causes water temperatures to rise almost five degrees, from 39.8°F (4°C) to 49.8°F (9.8°C), with the average highest temperatures around 41°F (5.0°C) and lowest temps circling 42°F (5.6°C).
What to Wear in New York City in April
Who doesn’t want to feel like a true New Yorker, even if temporarily? You will need to make style meet function. Coming here means doing so much exploring, going from one means of transportation to another, so we always want to be comfortable.
👚 Go for breezy base layers like shorter sleeves and denim pants. You can get good basic pieces from shops like Uniqlo on Fifth Avenue if you have to buy them in town.
🧥 Lighter outer layers — even if it is warmer, you still need an outer layer just in case. Look for a light sweater or jacket if you want to look like a local.
🧤 Sunglasses, hair clips or ties, and a reusable water bottle can also be needed as the weather begins to warm up. You can easily get them around town, but I always take mine from home whenever I travel.
👢 Waterproof shoes that fit comfortably. New York is a huge city, and we always do more walking than previously intended, so make sure to get your comfiest ones in the bag.
🎒 Chic backpacks or totes— you will need a way to carry your outer layers, random stuff, and even things you might buy, like a book at Flatiron District’s darling: Rizolli Bookstore.

New York City in April: Ultimate Travel Guide
Are you planning your trip to New York City in April? Here’s a brief but comprehensive ultimate travel guide I’ve put together for you! It’s got all the little details you need to make the most of your time here.
Is New York City Safe to Travel To?
A hundred per cent! New York is an incredibly safe as a tourist destination for all travelers. I have walked the streets so many times late at night after a concert. But you do need to take some precautions, just as you would anywhere else for the first time. As a visitor, it’s good to follow some basic safety guidelines.
First thing to do is good research on where you’re staying, both the place itself and the area around it. Once you get to planning your days, I recommend you only book tours or shows online or through your accommodation if you’re staying at a larger hotel.
Please avoid isolated areas at all costs, no matter the time of day, always keeping an eye on your surroundings. It is always better to be safe than sorry! Also, leave all your fancier stuff back where it’s safe, depending on your plans for the day!
It’s also recommended to be respectful of local customs and dress codes if you see that there are any. As tourists, use trusted services to ensure you’re going from place to place. I’d advise you to only use Uber or even rent a car if you plan on going out at night.
Stay in touch with friends and family, no matter where they are, and tell them about your plans.
I am definitely biased, but trust me, traveling to the US, more so New York City, can be wonderful if you plan correctly.
